Maruki's hands land comfortably at Akira's waist, but that question makes his fingers flex tighter than he meant to. Loss is more or less always on Maruki's mind when it comes to those he cares for most; strangely, though, the same isn't true when it comes to Akira. The man has a way of offsetting all the things that he'd usually worry endlessly over. It's difficult to have anxiety over tragedy befalling him when he's impossibly strong. It's impossible to fear that he'll drive Akira away with his hyperfocus on his own work, because it's not only a proclivity they share, but one they delight in with each other.
Maybe he was foolish to not have considered a much more banal and inevitable sort of loss. It wouldn't be the first time.
He releases his grip after a second, smooths his palms up and down Akira's sides. ]

Some pain that didn't appear from a conversation about mortality and loss does make itself known when Akira says that; his brow creases, his mouth twists into an uncomfortable frown.
